I have read a few comments on stride length, but does not answer my problem.
When i got the Fitbit the stride length defaulted to 100.5 cm and this is according to height and weight.
I do a lot of road running which includes up and down hills. My first run was 200m short of the actual distance which was measured by motor vehicle and on google maps. Since then i have increased and decreased the stride length, but with no luck. I am disappointed because the fitbit is not serving the purpose i bought it for.
Secondly they say you can do outside biking, but what dicipline do you choose.

Thanks WendyB. I haved tried many different settings and it does not work. One of the main reasons is that the stride length in running changes according to pace and elevation of the surface and how constant you maintain your pace. I thought that with having gps, that the distance would be accurate. I have even reduced the stride length to 90 cm and the distance on the fitbit was 600m shorter than google maps. Do you know of anyone who's stride length setting works 100%. the default was set on height 176cm and weight 72 Kg's. As i said, it gave a sride length of 100.5cm.
I appreciate your reply

If you are using the GPS feature of your Surge, then your stride length is ignored for your runs. As for GPS, it is subject to error due to the standard margin of error (something like 10 meters, or maybe it is 10 feet, I don't remember which) combined with interference from trees, buildings, mountains, clouds, and high latitudes.
When you say your Surge was off by 200m, how long was your run? If said run was an out and back of say ten kilometers, then 200 meters isn't at all unusual. Another way to mess up GPS is for you to run a tight circuit such as multiple laps on a 400m track; the tight(ish) curves combined with the standard error for GPS devices will virtually always measure short.

Hi Shipo. thanks for the reply. The distance i ran was 8.4 Km's. I ran a 9.4Km.s route and it was out by 600m. I bhave also noticed of late that the Gps does not kick in, so i use quick start. I presume that the Gps does start later on because the roue is displayed. Why does fitbit not inform us that any Gps related function does not use the stride length.

The attachment states that the Gps will not be turned on for runs longer than 15 minutes. Is this so.
Thanks
