Sudden unexpected total discharge of battery after charging fully

I now have a surge. I've had it for a little over a year now and this has happened 5 or 6 times in the past few months. I fully charged the unit yesterday. Normally the full charge will last a full week. I went for my power walk this morning (in a Virgin Pulse competition by the way), then by the gym for weights and when I tried to sync, it was dead. Apparently it discharged overnight because I have 0 (ZERO!) steps where I should have about 5000+ to this point. Has anyone else experienced this issue? I think I've had every model FitBit since they started making them and this model seemed to be the best so far but once you get beyond that 1 year mark.....

I should also note under normal circumstances I receive an email notice that my FitBit battery charge is low. When the discharge happens there is no warning whatsoever. It just dies. I managed to get my minimum daily steps in regardless, just cheated out of the 5000+ that didn't get captured.
