Surge HR monitor not working

Only had this Surge 1 week, a replacement for the first faulty one. Now the HR monitor just displaying --. As I don't think I'm dead and pretty sure my heart is still beating, I'm hoping someone can suggest what I might be doing wrong. Worn on dominant wrist, face on outside of wrist about 1cm above sticky out wrist bone. All other functions appear to be working. HR data not downloading to iPad either so it's not recording it ( not just a display issue).
Any clues?
