I went for a 6hr cycle on saturday in which i cycled 74.5 miles at an average speed of just under 13mph. The route was fairly hilly (500m) gain and i could tell at points my heart rate must have been getting pretty high.
At the end of the cycle my fitbit said that i had burnt 1859 calories and my heart rate was on average 98. Im a fairly fit guy so i thought at the time that the heart rate and therefoe the burn could be right, but after seeing that estimated burn thourgh mapmyride and others was about 4000 calories i was a bit puzzled.
I then on sunday went for a 30 min walk (to the pub) of about 2.18miles which the fitbit said was 3767 steps, average HR of 103!!! and calories burnt 313. This would mean i burn the 1859 calories from the hilly cycle in 3hrs of walking along a flat path.
Im really looking for some help on which of these two activities is accurate and which is massivley wrong.

Hi, I've no idea, I've asked similar questions in the past and have pretty much given up on getting any sense on the HR and therefore the calorie count.
I've just got in from a 40 mile ride. On Polar app (chest strap for HR) an HR average of 135, Fitbit shows 95.
At one point Polar was showing 165 and a glance at the Surge showed 81.
Fitbit won't concede its doesn't work properly so there will never be an answer on here from moderators just guesswork from disappointed users. I just hope they are addressing it for future models or updates.

Oh, calories on Fitbit was 896, on Polar 1257. In this instance and looking at the HR's and distance/speed, I'll go with Polar, but then of course my calorie count is out for total burn for the day which then skews intake on Fitbit.

That post you linked to has absolutley no relevance whatsoever.
Weight, Height and age etc are all correct but that wouldnt make a difference in the two activites given completley different readings anyway.
Seems obvious that its either widley inaccurate for walking or for cycling, which is it?

Thanks for the information @Batcheese13, I would like to know if you keep having problems with your calories? If you do, could you please provide me with some screenshots of the inconvenience? In the meantime, I would like to recommend using the SmartTrack feature to track your activities.
Hope to hear from you soon. ![]()
