Hello @Lisaalcock! Welcome to the Family! 🙂 Thanks for letting me know what troubleshooting steps you've done. Please confirm that you have the latest version of the Fitbit App. Also, Have you tried to restart it? If you haven't please do and try to sync after it.
I hope this resolves your syncing issue, keep me posted! 😉

I have the same issue. My battery died yesterday day afternoon. Charged it back up today and it will not sync. Previously I believe my bluetooth device just showed Surge. After deleting that device and starting over, I only see Surge (Classic). In any case, I removed the bluetooth device. I closed all apps, Hard booted the phone (ios 6 plus with latest iOS), hard booted the watch, reconnected to Surge (Classic) in blue tooth which shows connected but when I re-open Fitbit App on iphone it will not sync. I was syncing over the weekend and in fact changed time zones and it updated fine. Just since battery died but I've deleted everything and started over reconnected as new device and it still will not sync.
