Surge music control - screen information doesn't update

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

For the last 5-6 months I've been having an issue with the Surge, where the 'now playing' screen doesn't change if I press the forward button (top right) to go to the next song. The name of the new song and artist doesn't get updated, until the screen turns off and I turn it back on by double-clicking the left/home button. The music does change, I can control play/pause and go forward, it's just the screen information that doesn't update instantly. Strangely enough, the progress bar seems to be reflecting the changes.

I have restarted the Surge and also checked that the device is up to date on its software. I'm not sure what else I can do to fix this. I use the Surge to control music in group fitness classes and it's very frustrating not being able to tell if the right song will start playing. The reason I cannot trust the watch without the screen is that the music control sometimes stops working completely, possibly because of Bluetooth connectivity issues in the group ex room. The unreliability of the Surge screen information causes delays in the class and it is quite frustrating both for me and the participants.

For that reason I'm also interested in the opinions of Blaze users - is that watch better as far as music control goes (outside of the additional volume and back/fwd functionality)?

Does anyone have any useful advice or explanation for the cause of the screen delay?

Hello, @Klara! It is nice to have you here!Heart Just a question, what App are you using to connect your music?

It's possible that the app you're using to play music does not support the AVRCP Bluetooth profile, which is required to control music on your Surge. For example Pandora does not work with Surge. The following music apps should work successfully:

  • Play Music
  • LG Music app
  • Samsung music app
  • Rdio
  • Spotify
  • Amazon Music

If you were previously able to control music but now see "Not connected" or "Connecting..." on your Surge, test whether you're able to control music after trying each of these troubleshooting tips:

  • On your mobile device, go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Surge (Classic) is connected. If you no longer see Surge (Classic) on the list, you need to set it up music control again.
  • Confirm that your mobile device is within about 20 feet of your Surge.
  • In the settings on your Surge, confirm that Bluetooth Classic is set to "Pair."
  • Try switching Bluetooth Classic from "Pair" to something else and then back to "Pair."
  • Restart your mobile device.

If none of these steps work, you can try to pair it again by following these troubleshooting steps:

  1. On your mobile device, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
  2. In the list of devices, find your tracker.
  3. Tap the icon next to the tracker name and then tap Forget this Device.
  4. Restart your mobile device.
  5. Try setting up music control again.

In my experience both the Surge and the Blaze have work perfect to control my music at the gym, the App that I use is Spotify. This should get you back on track, let me know! Woman Happy

Thank you Solange. I don't have a problem controlling music on my phone with the Surge, except the information on the Surge doesn't update when I change the song currently playing. I use the Samsung Music app. I attach screenshots to demonstrate my problem.

Step 1 - first song is playing, Surge matches the app

Step 2 - press the fwd button (top right), second song is playing in the app but Surge is still showing the first song

Step 3 - the Surge screen goes off after about 15 seconds

Step 4 - I double press the home (left) button and Surge screen now shows the correct song

Sorry about including so many images. I hope this illustrates the issue more clearly. It's nothing to do with pairing, Bluetooth works fine, except with the information being sent back to the watch doesn't seem to be instantly updated. In the first six to nine months of using Surge for music control I did NOT have this problem. This is a quite recent development, perhaps the past 3-4 months.

Thanks, Klara

Hi there, I was wondering if there's been any update on this issue? I'm using the fitbit blaze with a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 running 6.0.1 marshmallow and having the same problem

There haven't been any updates from Fitbit unfortunately. I am the OP and I have given up on the Surge and bought the Blaze for its superior music control. However, I am now also experiencing the same issue as I did with the Surge regarding the music information not changing on the screen. It's only just started happening in the last couple of weeks. I still have the same phone (Samsung Galaxy S5, Android version 6.0.1).

Hello, @Klara, @SunsetRunner! Thanks for being here. Just a question have you updated to the latest firmware version? Version 2.42 just came out.

You can update and then forget your tracker's bluetooth settings and set it up again. Let me know how it goes please! Man Very Happy

@SolangeEI have updated my Blaze to the latest firmware but the display problem is now worse than before. Even when the screen goes blank and I activate it again it still shows the old song. I found the only way to update the display to the correct information is to swipe up after activating the display. I am not happy with this update. I would like to go back to what I had before.

Hey, @Klara! Just one last question, have you tried to restart your tracker and set it up as a new device?

I'll be around. 🙂

Having the same issue. Had a Blaze and a Samsung S5 mini, music control worked perfectly for months, then this exact issue. Tried all the normal tricks, no result. Recently upgraded to a J5 pro and ran all updates and a fresh install of the fitbit app, no change. Then smashed my Blaze on the weekend in a bike crash, bought a new one, deleted all BT pairings etc, re-paired and updated, no change.
