In a word: badly
Not only would they fail to track as you're not taking any steps, you'd also risk breaking the fitbit as they're not waterproof

Hi @Hrclemmer1231. These products are NOT waterproof. They should not be used while swimming. There is a hole in most of the devices for the altimeter. They should not even be worn in the shower. They can handle splashes like rain or sweat, that's it. The only one that's considered to be water resistant is the Flex and even that is not calibrated to register swimming correctly. Fitbit recommends that you register swimming as a manual activity.

They don't, Fitbit are calibrated to track exercise that id done in air, and will not take into consideration the extra resistance of the water.
Also Fitbit doesnt recomend swimming with the Surge.
