gps and heartrate

just got my surge today and took it out for a test run. hopefully this is an easy question. with gps running I can't seem to do anything else. every mile it will vibrate and give me a heart rate but I can't check my heart rate on the go. am I missing something?

Yes, you are!

 

When operating in one of the exercise modes, the bottom line of text (under the timer display) allows you to swipe left and right through a whole set of things. Heart rate is one of those.
