So my fitbit will take data from fitnesspal showing the food i've eaten, but fitnesspal doesn't show the calories i've burned. is there something i have to do to make sure that fitnesspal gets the info from fitbit?

@ArtYero It's great to have you here!
If Fitbit is taking the food that you log in MyFitnessPal the calories burned should appear in MyFitnessPal then. Go to MyFitnessPal and click on "Exercise" and you'll see below "cardiovascular" Fitbit Calorie Adjustment, click there and you'll see how many calories you have in Fitbit and how many in MFP.
If you're still not seeing anything, please unlink and relink the accounts.

There is still nothing showing up. Could it be something on MFP side?

I am experiencing the same problem as the OP -- I make changes to my meal plan on MFP and the changes show up on Fitbit right away. However, my exercise calories / fitbit adjustment are not updating at all. I have also unlinked and relinked my accounts -- sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't.
It's not as if this problem between Fitbit and MFP doesn't happen frustratingly often for many users. However the response from the Advocate rather disingenously suggests otherwise.
