I recently integrated myfitnesspal app into fitbit, so that they can share info. I noticed the instructions stated not to record exercise on fitbit, but only myfitnesspal. Does this mean I can not use the exercise function on my actual tracker?

Thanks for being part of our Community @hunter87597. You can use the activity mode on your tracker and the information will sync to your Fitbit account without any trouble. That message you mentioned refers to manually logging activities that your device cannot record as swimming, skydiving, etc. in MyFitnessPal only. You can find more information about the information transferred between your accounts in chart below:
