Versa 4 isn't tracking my sleep data

I've recently upgraded my fitbit from Versa Lite to Versa 4.  So far I'm really happy & especially so as the band isn't affecting my arm like previous fitbit's have.

Unfortunately though my Versa 4 doesn't seem to be tracking my sleep.  This is a problem I've had for some time with my previous Versa Lite as well as that only ever seem to recorded a small portion of sleep.  Not recording sleep on my Versa 4 is obviously affecting the other aspects of my data so I'm not getting everything recorded purely because I'm not recording any sleep.

I've tried adjusting the band, moving it up or around on my arm & even swapped wrists but nothing seems to capture any sleep.

I do get up in the night but still get some sleep.  I am curious to know how much because I am often tired in the day but obviously without my fitbit tracking anything, I wonder what else I can do.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be grateful for your advice.

Hi there, @leeds230. Thanks for stopping by in the Fitbit Community Forums. Thanks for the details provided in your post about the issue with your Versa 4. I'm glad to hear you're happy with your Versa 4 and you're more comfortable with this Fitbit device than ever.

Regarding your sleep data, I recommend considering the following in order to get sleep stages:

  • If you slept in a position that prevented your device from getting a consistent heart-rate reading or wore it too loosely. For best results, wear your device higher on your wrist (about 2-3 finger widths above your wrist bone). The band should feel secure but not too tight.
  • If you used the Begin Sleep Now option in the Fitbit app (instead of simply wearing your device to bed). For more information on automatic sleep tracking, see How do I track my sleep with my Fitbit device?
  • If you slept for less than 3 hours.
  • If your device’s battery is critically low.

For more information, see What should I know about Fitbit sleep stages?

Additionally, I'd recommend to sync your Versa 4 to the app after waking up. This will help to make sure that all your data is sync properly.

Also, note that your time asleep is calculated by subtracting your time spent awake and restless from your overall tracked sleep time. For example, if you slept 8 hours but woke up 2 times for 15 minutes each, your time asleep would be 7 hr 30 min.

Thank you MarreFitbit.

I've actually started using the Begin Sleep Now function which seems to be helping to bring through some sleep data even though it is very basic and not adding very much information.

@leeds230 You're very welcome! However, please take into consideration that using the Begin Sleep Now option, will prevent you from receiving sleep stages.

As suggested above, all this information can be found here What should I know about Fitbit sleep stages?

Thanks MarreFitbit.

I have a feeling that no matter what I try, I'm not going to get sleep recordings... oh well.

I'm following to see if you get an answer.  My sleep tracking is hilariously inaccurate.  Even if I use the feature that you start and then stop so you actually see the amount, it will change and will not log.  I read that this could be a Fitbit product issue and they aren't rushing to announce it or they'd have to replace with another watch.  I'm very frustrated as it is one of the key reasons I use a tracker.

Begin Sleep Now does not log either.  This is a very frustrating issue.

I have this same problem, except up until today when it recorded zero sleep, it would record some of my sleep (2 to 3 hrs), but not the whole night.

While searching for info on how to fix it this morning, I learned from another user that if you manually add your sleep time, all the sleep data shows up (stages, duration, etc.) on the app. So, I tried it this morning and it worked. This tells me that my Versa 4 is recording my sleep, but then there's something going wrong when it communicates with the app which is super frustrating.

The person who suggested the fix said manually adding their sleep time a few days in a row fixed the problem. I'm only on day one, but if this fixes my problem, I'll report back.

Yes, please let me know if this works.

I've started using an Android app called Sleep which seems to work well but it would be really nice if the Fitbit worked like it's supposed to!

Hi @MarreFitbit, I upgraded from the Versa 2 to the Versa 4 one week ago and since then my sleep metrics have not recorded.  I had no problems with my Versa 2 recording my metrics automatically.

I wear the watch with the same looseness as my previous watch, I sleep more than 3 hours and the watch is charged. I don’t want to manually tell my device that I’m going to sleep nor do I want to record my sleep after the fact. How do I get it to record my sleep automatically as I assumed that the upgrade would give me the same or better functionality?

I have the same issue with sleep data, no issues on my Versa 3 but with Versa 4 not proper data, I even got Premium and still doesn’t  work, hope they fix it!!

Potential Fix Update: So, I manually recorded my sleep on Tuesday and Wednesday. Then my Fitbit accurately recorded my sleep without me having to do anything on Thursday and Friday. However, last night it recorded my sleep incorrectly again. I'd still recommend trying the fix though because maybe my Versa 4 is particularly finicky.

Hi all, I noticed that the lights behind my watch weren’t as visible (or didn’t turn on as often as my V2). I cleaned the back of my watch thoroughly and it is now recording my sleep (2 days so far) and the lights are more visible again.

I have had my Versa for 3 weeks and it doesn’t record any sleep. I have switched hands and clean the thing a lot and never tracked once. Interesting to see so many also having this issue. I had a Charge 2 for 6 years and it recorded sleep ok. Thought upgrading would improve that and it hasn’t…

Yeah, @AJBear it's a joke. I think it's a problem with the way the watch communicates with the app because when I manually add my sleep, suddenly all the sleep data and stages pop up on the app. I've tried all sorts of things to get it to auto recognize my sleep accurately, but nothing has worked.
