I was using my Versa 4 for several weeks, so the band was well-attached to the face. I swam in the ocean and then realized it was gone. Compared to the Versa 2 that I had before, this watch has a different closure mechanism ("infinity band") and it has a different attachment mechanism. Depending on which mechanism is more suspect, I would either chose a Versa 4 and get a different band, or I would go back to the Versa 2 which has the old-school pins for attaching to the face. Any recommendations based on experience with a Versa 4 (or similar) falling off without getting lost?

Welcome to the Fitbit community, @BatteryGuy!
Sad to hear what has happened with your Versa 4.
Swimming in open water often puts more stress to wearables due to higher water pressure caused by stronger water currents. That's why I always recommend Spigen Rugged Armor Pro for usage under rough conditions:

I find the band will detach just when I’m cleaning it. I don’t find the strap very stable and I don’t think we can get another style

Thank you for the replies. Chanel31, if I understand correctly, a different bank wouldn't solve the problem because it still has the same attachment mechanism with the watch face. I decided to get a Versa 2 on ebay, even though Fitbit offered a 35% discount on a new Versa 4 at the Google Store.

Welcome back to the Fitbit community, @Chanel31!
That's why Spigen took a different approach for their Rugged Armor Pro band where the module of the Fitbit device is firmly hold in the frame of this band:
