Yes.. now that I finally got GPS working (that took awhile) I'm seeing that it almost always tracks my distances as longer than their actual amount (for example, yesterday it read 3.9 mi on a route I know is only 3 miles

This is common in all Fitbit devices. Basically the GPS is mainly used for path drawing on map. The distance calculation is mainly done considering the steps with the stride occasionally (sometimes, somewhere, somehow) estimated via GPS. If the pace/speed varies along the path the distance can be very off.
The above is true for for walking/running/hiking. If instead you go cycling (or you go running but select cycling as exercise) the distance becomes more accurate as no steps calculation is involved.
It's since the release of the Ionic that users have been asking/begging Fitbit to clarify/fix the algorithm but the answers by Fitbit have been always in denial and scripted (as in "make sure GPS is on, maybe sure not trees or building are covering the view of the sky and so on...."
