so I decided to look further and realised it only shows up on this watch face. Not any of the others. So I went into the app and found it. Apparently it’s when the phone app and watch haven’t been synced for an hour??? And this isn’t working properly either because I’ve just synced and then it’s still there

Hi there, @Joeym72. Welcome to the Fitbit Community Forums. Thanks for the image attached. I will be glad to answer your inquiry.

Please note that the icon you're seeing is a phone with a line through it. Please note that this is a new implementation on the Fitbit Versa 4.

This icon means that your Versa 4 is out of your phone's Bluetooth range. As soon as your Fitbit device gets back near the phone, the icon will disappear. For troubleshooting tips, see Why won't my Fitbit device sync?

@Joeym72   Your photo with the full clock face shows the issue much better.  The top center white icon is Fitbit's status indicator.  That upper left white icon, the icon in question, was designed by the developer, not Fitbit.

I apologize if I'm misreading everything you wrote.  It looks like those icons appear on your screen, even when your Fitbit syncs.  Do you have any syncing issues?  Is your Versa 4 listed as being connected in the Bluetooth list on your phone settings?
