I'm not a developer, but I thought this is the best place to post my issue. I have been using an app called DriveBit to start/stop a timer and then post the activity to FitBit to negate steps counted when driving. There are a few activity types such as:
Driving
Driving heavy truck, tractor, bus
Flying Airplane
Motorcycle
Pushing plane in and out of hangar
Riding in a bus
Riding in a car or truck
Custom
I use the "Driving heavy truck, tractor, bus" option quite a bit for using my large farm tractor which counts a lot of steps otherwise. I noticed the other day after moving snow for 3 hours that my calories posted were 704, that is about 236 calories per hour. If you look up the activity of "Driving heavy truck, tractor, bus" on other websites, for my weight of 205, you get about 185 calories per hour.
The activity of "Driving" figures out to about 158 calories per hour.
This is a response I got from the app developer:
"This is one of the inconsistencies we've dealt with between the way a user enters data and the way that apps enter data. They actually wouldn't let us provide calorie counts via their API if we used a known activity type (like driving a heavy truck, etc.), only if we define a custom one. Let us know how it goes. We may have to log a few bugs with them to correct this.
