We have built an application that pulls activity data from the Fitbit web API. We've found that if the user does not regularly use the Fitbit iOS app, we won't get any data for them. Once they open the iOS app, we get new data for them for probably a day or two, then it stops.
Is there any official word on how this works? How long does the app send data in the background? Is there a way to keep it alive and sending data even if they don't use their Fitbit app? A lot of our users use their Fitbit daily, but never use the app. They're not interested in the trends, only their daily 10k steps. It will be very difficult for us to change that habit, which will make our app not very useful.
