Hello,
I have both sleep classic and sleep stages data from the project I am working on. Is sleep classic just an older, less accurate version, or are there any advantages to sleep classic over sleep stages?
Thanks,
Camilla

Hi @CamillaMapstone. I'm not a developer or (current) researcher, just a long time user with a physiology background. I hope I can give you some insight. Am I correct in assuming that all your study participants are using fairly current models with heart rate sensors (OHRMs)? Older models, without OHRMs, give sleep patterns (what you call sleep classic).
All models with OHRMs collect data on a beat-to-beat basis. The sleep algorithm is proprietary, but it is known to include HRV and RR to generate sleep stages, in addition to movement. Every user can get sleep patterns, instead of sleep stages every now and then. The most common reason is they slept in an odd position and the device couldn't collect enough high-quality heart rate data. Arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation are too irregular to give users sleep stages. Some benign arrhythmias, like very frequent PVCs, can also be too irregular to give sleep stages.
Strictly speaking, sleep patterns are older, but that is because older models lacked OHRMs. Current models are supposed to give sleep stages, but sleep patterns are the fallback result with unusable data.

Hello,
Yes, our participants are all using fairly new models with heart rate sensor. Thanks for replying, that's very helpful!
