Why do users need to authorize my app? How do user privacy settings work in the API?

Fitbit users own their data. Third-party developers must get approval from a user to access the user's non-public data.

When an API request is made using a user access token, the API is able to access a user's resources on behalf of the user. Authorized applications have read access to much of a user's data and may write certain types of data, if permitted by the user. A list of available resources can be found in the documentation.
