When logging a food, is it not possible to post both a food id and a food description? Must you use only one or the other of them?

I assume you are referring to foodId and foodName fields in the logging endpoint. In which case, yes you are correct.

can you change potassium from grams to milligrams in the food log? I am trying to add a protein shake and the potassium is in "mg" not "g", but I am unable to change the unit of measure in the log food menu, when creating a custom item

The unit used for potassium should be in "mg" already. Please see:
