What's the 10-20% remaining part in "isolate" and "concentrate"? Harmful stuff?

Good question. I wonder how good the GNC brand of Whey Protein Pro Performance powder is. Anyone know?

My fault, absorption, would have probably been a helpful word choice to have added. Isolate will absorb faster in the body vs concentrate. And the % remaining is typically carbs or fats that didn't get removed during the process of making it.

Isopure is very good, but I have been using Myolean whey protein. This protein is very good and mixes well. The chocolate peanut butter is my favorite, but who doesn't like peanut butter and cholcalate.  : )

I have tried a bunch of them and haven't found one I can use.  I can't do whey because of a milk allergy and I can't do soy because of hypothyroidism.  I don't like the creatine, pea powder, or rice.  So, I have substituted real food for the drinks.  I find that I function just fine with a boiled egg, or if I want carbs I use a PBJ sandwhich, coconut milk and chocolate is good, too!

Food is fuel, not friends.

ONNIT makes a Hemp based protein powder called Hemp Force. Works and tastes great for post workouts. They make chocolate and vanilla-acai flavors. The chocolate is great with almond milk and some frozen fruit blended into a smoothie. And it's all natural, organic so no weird ingredients to worry about. Definitely my favorite and I've tried most of the major brand protein powders. www.onnit.com

Like Zelda, I also use Shakeology, randomly alternating between Chocolate and Vanilla. Have been using it for 16 months, ALMOST every day, replacing either breakfast OR lunch. I love the taste, love the natural nutrient content and moderate protein amount--I mix with ice and Almond Milk, and add fruit to the Vanilla-- banana, orange or any berry I have on hand. It helps me focus on what I have to do nutritionally for the day. Try it and let me know what you think  Cande's Shakeology page

there is no "best". You have to make various decisions to determine which will work for you, number one is why you want such an artificial product in the first place?

The second is whether you want the base protein to be casein, milk (they are NOT the same), egg, soy, pea, etc. Studies show soy is actually better for weght loss, but you could always just use soymilk.

Next is what you want the protein to carb ratio to be, in other words do you want just protein or do you want a meal replacement - a powder that contains both protein and carb?

Next, do you want sugar or sugar free (artificial sweetener) if you choose artificial sweetener make sure it is one you can tolerate because they usually contain a lot, as in enough to cause gas if you are sensitive.

Next, check those calories, some are made for bodybuilding and can be 300 calories per serving.

Next, can you get a sample before buying the whole can? some taste absolutely repulsive... ask me how I know.

Two of my favorites are Reserveage Organics, Grass-fed Whey and Jay Robb's egg white protein powder. The first is less expensive, but the egg white has slightly more protein per serving. I use protein powder maybe 3 times a week so I'm not an expert, but these have worked really well for me.

I have tried several protein powders and it seems that the ones I like the taste have things in them that I don't want, ex artificial sweetner or high carb count or something else.  I usually make my smoothies with almond milk or greek yogurt.  My favorite one is **ahem**e 0% less than 100 calories and 22 grams of protien.  Then I just mix it with frozen fruit or peanut butter or banana to add the sweetness.

A nutritionist reccommended JayRobb brand to me and so far I've liked

all the flavors.

I did read that if you're on thyroid medication you should stay away

from soy so that's something to consider.

It really depends what you want to use it for.  I love Melissa's mix as a recovery drink, (http://mikesmixrecoverydrink.com/) I lift and do a lot of mountain biking, and this helps me not be super sore!

I use a vegan protein powder from Uni-key Health called body protein, its a pea/rice protein blend. It mixes well and can even be used in baking.
