I have plugged the Fitbit USB device into 3 different computers, all Win-10 devices. None of them detect the adapter. Nothing works. On one computer a brief window popped up, then disappeared. What am I supposed to do, short of returning this to the store?

If you have downloaded the Fitbit software and the dongle is not recognized by your 3 computers, the accessory might be damaged. If this is the case please contact Customer Support. They will let you know what can be done. In the meantime, if you have a supported mobile device. You can use it to set up and sync your Fitbit Zip.

@1WiseGuy I've found some threads where users have had success trying different workarounds 1 2 3. You are welcome to try them out. Hopefully you be able to fix the issue easily. Thanks for your patience while dealing with this situation.

I'm glad to hear that you've got it to work@1WiseGuy. Thanks for the update. Your two trackers will reset tonight and each one should start showing your walking steps depending on the use.
You can use the same Fitbit dongle plugged into one computer to sync your Fitbit One and Fitbit Zip. Your tracker will sync approximately every 15 minutes if it's awake and when you are approximately 10-15 feet away. If you want to sync your data immediately you can force sync.
