My fitbit zip account keeps showing steps during times i did not wear it

I stopped wearing my fitbit zip in April. I just started trying to wear it again.  When I logged in for the first time since, it would not sync, and yet, showed step counts for the for all the days I had not worn it, random ones that did not match reality.  I have a pixel 2 but didn't have nor want the app set up to use my phone pedometer, but even if I did, the step counts don't match reality. For instance, it thinks I walked 1100 steps the day I was in labor, and I can assure you I did no walking then.

I couldn't get the device to sync,  so I uninstalled and reinstalled the app.  Now it syncs, and the step count for the days since I synced now match what the device shows, but all those old random steps on days i didn't wear it are still there.  How do I get rid of those, and why does it think I took them to begin with?
