Short battery life and battery icon on screen

have changed battery multiple times, will only display a large battery type icon. Tried syncing, states it locates the zip, ,then fails.

Nice to see you here @nirsie! This is not the expected behavior of a Fitbit Zip. In this case, I would recommend checking the metal spring inside the Zip's battery compartment. Sometimes your tracker will have battery issues when this is bent. Here is a picture of how it should look like:
