Will it harm the fitbit zip to put a rubber band around the holder and fitbit face to keep it from coming out of the holster?

A rubber band wouldn't harm your Zip. Have you tried getting another holder for the Zip?

The rubber band I use is a clear very small one. And while my Zip hasn't fallen out of the holster, there is so much talk about those tiny, extremely slippery things coming out of the holster. This is preventive action. I also have made a little leash for it that attaches inside my pocket.

@SunsetRunner  what a clever idea to put the Zip on a leash. My friend keeps the Zip on the pocket of her pants and it's done well. I do like the added protection of the rubber band. Nice touch!
