t seems this is a bug that Fitbit are aware of and are working on. Keep an eye on the following thread where they are posting updates:

@ELDERT51 @SteveH I don't believe that this is a bug for Fitbit to fix. Many users trace this to an iOS update. @ELDERT51 If you didn't know this already, those red numbers are called app badge notifications. On your Fitbit app Today page, tap on your inbox in the upper right. Check your messages and notifications and delete them. To remove the badge notification and keep it away, please do the following: go to your iPhone settings, then tap on Notifications, then scroll down and tap on Fitbit. Turn Badges off.
I think, but can't prove, that the iOS update turned badge notifications on. I use the FedEx Delivery Manager app a lot. The badge notifications were turned on, but I never received a badge notification in the past.
