Your Flex is primarily a pedometer so it works best when tracking activities that are step based. What type of exercise were you doing?
If, based on the analysis of the steps, it thinks that you were particularly active (not just mildly active) then it will award active minutes.

If you activity is not largely step based (cycling, rowing, weight etc) then you'll get more accurate data if you tell it what you were doing and you do that by manually logging the activity.
