App stopped showing intensity colors and 15 min details after the latest iOS app update

Hi all.

I have noticed a change in the Fitbit iOS app since the most recent update.

In the graph that illustrates how many steps/miles you do each day I used to be able to see exactly how many miles/steps were done every 15 mins in a day by touching each bar in the graph. This feature for some reason has now disappeared which is a pain as I cannot tell exactly how many steps/miles were walked before and after a walk.  To some this many not be much of an issue but when you like to log the exact distance of your walk each day then this is a problem. I guess I could just wear the wristband when I start a walk but would much rather have the feature back. Just wonder if anyone else out there sees this as a problem or is it just me?

Mom2Jacob,

If you go to your "Account" page -> Select "Third Party Apps" -> Select "Manage 3rd Party Apps" -> (log in to your account again, if required) -> it will show what 3rd Party apps are interacting with your Fitbit account.  In my case (shown below) I have 2 smart scales (summer home & winter home). I had Gyroscope connected, but I "Revoked Access", which made absolutely no difference to Fitbit's functionality, or lack thereof.

Sounds like Fitbit support is implying that either

  1. the previous functionality came from a 3rd party app

or

  2. a 3rd party app is messing up the old functionality

neither of which are correct.

Kind of funny that the only things I say when I do a third party thing is right below on the screen. Facebook, Twitter, etc. Facebook is the only one I have on that list and I don’t have it connected to Fitbit at all. I can’t even figure out how to revoke access so that tells me I don’t have any third parties attached so I have no idea what that’s even about

But all the info is still available on the web browser dashboard. So if their excuse is that they’re not holding that more detailed information any more, it’s a blatant lie.

The hint that it’s a FitBit/Apple thing is far more likely. In the same way that you can’t sync FitBit data with Apple health (without additional apps), it makes sense that Apple would also limit FitBit‘s app functionality to make an Apple watch more attractive. It’s super lame but it makes sense. But if I could afford an Apple watch, I’d’ve bought one. If they’re going to limit functionality they need to product match too.

Very disappointing that the recent update didn’t fix the issue.

I was thinking about the Apple watch too, but they don’t really have anything that compares to the Fitbit app. They also charge extra, just like Fitbit does for premium, if you want extra besides the health app.  The health app is just ok, not great.
The only thing about Apple though, is if they had the same issue it would probably be fixed pronto!

I hate to admit I’m kind of a dork, but I record my steps, calories and miles per every 5000 steps in Apple’s numbers. Sometimes I might miss a line so I use the itemized calories, miles and steps to estimate the missing information. So today I missed the 15,000 information. I used the dashboard because, obviously, the other information is missing from the app.  It was kind of easy this time, because the information was missing today. I could use the day’s list instead of using the spot where you can pick the date, which only includes steps and calories and it’s very hard to use.  This is the main use I have with the 15 minute increment details. However, one other way I use it is with sleep.  If I forget when I went to sleep and I’m looking at the sleep data for the night, I’ll sometimes use the steps from that night to determine when I probably went to bed. I might also use the heart rate also.  I guess if I had that issue now, I could use the dashboard to see where the steps are gone and sort of roughly estimate when that is. I definitely want everything back as soon as possible but the dashboard does substitute temporarily, maybe not perfectly, but not as bad as I thought.

Well, I have the problem and am not linked to any 3rd party apps.
Thanks so much for posting how to check that. Much appreciated!

@cfrankt Wow, I kinda feel like an idiot because I didn’t know Apple had the authority to push other companies to make their apps less functional? I have always known they regulate a lot regarding apps on the App Store but I didn’t realize it could go to that length.
But your theory would make sense given Apple’s sneaky proprietarization tactics. Honestly wouldn’t surprise me one bit.

If that’s what’s happening, then I am curious about any Android users.

Android users, can you please verify if the app is like this with you too?
It would be interesting if the Fitbit app on the Google Play Store is similarly less functional, considering Fitbit is a Google brand.

Can you see if he has automatic updates set and, if so, did he get the 7/27/21 update?

Best Answer

I must’ve gotten myself confused because I thought that a lot of the folks here WERE using Androids. So I assumed for the longest time that we were all in the same boat.

If it’s an Apple problem, then that gives me just another reason to switch back to Android.
And, would mean I owe Fitbit an apology for making the app so bad.

Won’t apologize for the lack of explanation about what’s going on though.
Unless the folks at Fitbit are like, under contract to not disclose that Apple is the reason for this ridiculousness, then I don’t understand why we as customers are being kept in the dark about what’s going on and why.

I will gladly buy an Android and a new Fitbit tracker if the app still works on Androids.

Eagerly awaiting confirmation from Android users what their apps are like after 7/27.
Thanks to everyone who’s been contributing!

I have an apple but early on someone said they had no changes on an old apple phone.  I wondered if the phone hadn’t automatically updated to the Fitbit 7/27/21 update.  I’m absolutely sure this issue is totally on Fitbit’s side.  Apple had an update but it had something to do with their watch, apples communications with iPhone.  If you don’t have an Apple Watch I’m sure it really didn’t do anything.  I’m not familiar with androids but Ladyhj said her husband’s Fitbit app is fine.  I am guessing updates are same with androids or iPhone, you can do automatic updates or manual.  It seems anybody that didn’t do the 7/27/21 Fitbit update are fine.  If there is someone that knows if you can manually update on android phones or if it seems all androids are fine with no issue.

doesn’t that make you mad? Are you going to get an android phone now? I’m planning on going over to my brothers to use his phone for that feature because I just need to update something small. The dashboard doesn’t have details for miles like it does for calories and steps.I wish I had an option but unless someone else knows there’s no other watch like it and no other app like it. I’m sure they know that and that’s why they’re doing this.
