Dashboard and daily steps don't match

This morning I checked my iOS Fitbit dashboard it reported 12,000 steps, when I'd barely been awake 15mins.  When I go to the bar charts with daily stats the correct number appears.  I'm a bit embarassed because I'm doing the Work week hustle with a friend and it looks like I'm cheating.  My real step count for today is 16,000 (which shows correctly when I drill down to daily bar charts, but the dashboard and challenge has 28,000. I don't know where the 12000 phantom steps are coming from or how to delete them.

Contact support (either chat or by phone) & send them screen shots. There are a lot of bugs on the app/dashboard & the only way they can fix it is if they can figure out exactly what's going.
