I have been waiting for black Friday sales for Charge 5 as my charge 4 screen has faded that I can't even see anything indoor. Bought one yesterday and spent about 1 hour and can't get it connected. End up return it to the store. I really hope it will work, but I saw on amazon some review also mention that it won't work for iphone 12 pro max. so I am checking here before I go for other brand.

If you charge 4 connected, your charge 5 should also Conniect.
At what step of the setup process does the failure occur? Also, do you get any error messages?
Another option would be to use a different phone to setup. The setup connects the tracker to your fitbit account, once connected, the fitbit app connects the tracker to the phone.

Doesn’t work on my iPhone 12 mini either so I would love to know how you got around this

When switching phones, there should be nothing more to do then.
Turn off old phone.
On new phone
Download app
Log in
Accept permissions
Setup notifications.
