In theory it makes sense, take the total number of steps and divide it by the number of days into the year we are. However when I’m looking at it and calculating it myself, I’m getting almost a 1000 step difference between what my Fitbit app claims my yearly average is and what I’m calculating it to be. I don’t think I’m doing the math wrong, but I can’t determine the error either. I’m trying to catch up on yearly steps so this is really bothering me. (Also I apologize if this is the wrong area to post this issue; I wasn’t sure what category this was.)

I find the best way to get accurate step count over a calendar period is from the fitbit.com dashboard.
On the dashboard, click on the "Log" tab at top, then "Activities". Then in the calendar icon at right, select start and dates to get exact total of steps and other stats.

While this is interesting and a useful tool for what I’m doing, this still hasn’t resolved my issue. If anything it’s confusing me more as now I’m sure I haven’t miss counted any steps. I still don’t understand how the average is calculated. I mostly use the app as it’s more convenient and I spend a majority of my time away from home.
thank you though as this will help me definitely ensure my count for the year is accurate and I can determine exactly how many steps I must catch up on so I can save it in my phone since I don’t know if which to trust, the app average or my math.
