Huge variation in distance recorded over same route ( = huge variation in average speed measured)

After being a fitbit user for many years I am very disappointed in the distance measurement.  I have joined Strava and like many have become more focused on my running metrics since they are more public and shared with friends.

I run the same ~4.6mi loop 2-3 times a week.  I have measured this with google but accept that it might not be perfectly accurate.  However the fitibit, while using GPS connection via the iOS, measures this distance between 4.4 and 5.1 miles.  This results in well over a min variation in min/mile speed measurement.  This is nearly a 10% error.

I am happy to share my runs if it helps solve the problem.  Also I see no major difference in the charted course map between the high and low distance measurements.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Fitbit Community, @SamEngineer.

Thanks for the details shared in your post. I am sorry to hear about the disappointment this situation has caused. I understand your concern and would like to advise that GPS accuracy depends on the signal strength among other factors. For more information, see our help articles: How accurate is my GPS data captured by my Fitbit device? How do I use GPS on my Fitbit device? and How does my Fitbit device calculate distance traveled?

Hope this helps!
