Why doesn’t my keyboard show on my screen to send messages to challenge participants. It appears on my phone but not iPad and I can use it here

I too use an iPad to navigate through the Fitbit App. It sounds like you are describing what is known as a frozen Keyboard. The way to fix that is to log out of your Fitbit App then completely shut down (power off) your iPad. Once the iPad is completely shut down wait about 1-2 mins then restart your iPad and log back into the a Fitbit App.

Is your Fitbit App the latest update version 3.6.1? And also what software version is your iPad? Lastly what brand of Fitbit Tracker do you have?
