New iOS app is driving me to a different product

I am devastated I updated my app without looking at what was included. The new design is not scannable, lacks many features that I used to check multiple times a day, and frustrates me. I was considering switching to something other than Fitbit, and this has cemented that decision for me.

I know this topic is already well discussed here but wanted to add my two cents. I am constantly checking my Fitbit app so this update really does disrupt my every day.

I am a UX architect by trade and this is a great real life example of what I am always advocating against — redesign for the sake of aesthetic, without user testing/review or functionality in mind. I am surprised a large company like Fitbit would let this happen. Were any users consulted? Did the whole team really think changing how the app looked made up for removing features? I am baffled and disappointed.

I want the view of zone minutes by week and month in one screen. I used to constantly check my previous days and weeks and now all I get is a graph. I don’t want to tap into each month and each week to see numbers, I want to easily scroll through the year.

I want to change the order of everything in the Today screen, not just the section.

I want colors to easily scan between sections.

I want the animation of my heart rate so I can easily tell if it’s real time or not. My Fitbit’s heart monitor is getting worse with age so it’s important to know whether it’s reading my rate or not.

The old app was really well designed.

hi linemouth,

You are not alone, as you know.  I am also saddened by the changes.  I'm not a performance athlete, but I like the data.  Who knows what the marketing idea is behind the changes but they are not very popular.  As of today I can't find my heart rate graph for an exercise session.  Very disappointing.  With the gift-giving season just around the corner I have my eyes open.  But I would prefer that fitbit roll back some of their changes.

Yeah I think I’ll try a Garmin Vivosmart 5. I’m sure Fitbit is having internal struggles over this app and what to do about the backlash, but I wish they had addressed it before Black Friday. I just got the update but obviously it’s been out for a few months now. They would have had larger sales this holiday season from current customers for gifts and upgrades if they hadn’t double downed on the new app.

At least Garmin uses color and designs sections where you reach a goal in a significant way. I reached all my top metric goals yesterday and you can’t even tell by glancing at the app. The teeny tiny checkmark under the circle is not large enough. They took away the celebratory design so it feels worse and is harder to read. I don’t even know what the second swoop inside those metric circles are. Is it filling it up again after I reach my goal? What if my goal is 20 zone minutes and I get 55? I won’t be able to tell what revolution that indicator is on. The nice full green circle was better in the old app.
