Not getting Sleep Stages with Surge.

Hi all,

does anyone out there know why my FB app on iPhone doesn't show the more detailed sleep pattern as on my wife's new FB device? Is it because my Surge is a couple of years old?

It's disappointing because the newer app sleep pattern is much more detailed.

Is there any way I can get the more detailed info?

Best regards

Paul

Hello @paulynorf, have a warm welcome to the Fitbit Community, it's great to have you on board. Smiley Happy

Unfortunately, Sleep Stages are not available for the Surge, only on Blaze, Charge 2, Alta HR and the new Ionic. I understand your concern about Sleep Stages and appreciate your understanding about this situation.

I hope this resolves your inquiry, if there's anything else I can do for you, please feel free to reply.

Hello @Asheryou, thanks for joining the conversation, it's great to have you on board the Fitbit Community. Smiley Happy

Please note that the Fitbit app currently has insights that provide an explanation for why you aren't receiving Sleep Stages on any given night. This is meant to provide insight into what might be occurring to cause this. The error messages are the following:

  1. We need more than 3 hours of sleep to reliably calculate your sleep stages. Learn more
  2. Your tracker couldn't get a consistent heart rate reading while you slept. Learn more
  3. We couldn’t generate sleep stages for this sleep. Please try again tomorrow. Learn more

When you tap on Learn more, you will be able to get more information about why your tracker didn't record sleep stages. Additionally, I'd like to suggest the following:

  • For any of the nights you were expecting to see Sleep Stages, did you ever click on the "Begin Sleep Now" or "Add Sleep Log" functions within the Fitbit App?
    • This is important to note because your tracker uses auto-detection to track Sleep Stages; so there's no need to try and remember to click on anything before falling asleep!
  • Do you have at least 3 consecutive hours of sleep?
    • This is important to note because you typically won't see sleep stages if you are waking up multiple times through out the night or taking short naps.
  • Your tracker's battery isn't at a critically low level prior to falling asleep.
  • Your device is tracking and syncing heart rate data.
    • This is important because Sleep Stages uses a combination of your movement and heart-rate patterns.
  • Your Fitbit App is updated to the latest version.

I hope this can be helpful, give it a try and keep me posted in case you need anything else.

I bought the more expensive Surge, thinking that it would have more functionality than my wife's Charge 2. I was especially interested in sleep stages. What a disappointment!

Hello @Roctor, I hope you're doing well, it's a pleasure for me to welcome you to the Fitbit Community. Smiley Happy

I sincerely apologize for the inconveniences this situation has caused you. We're always working to streamline our offerings as we introduce new products and although the Surge has been a very popular product for us, it will not receive further updates that will introduce Sleep Stages on it.

Please note that we’ll continue to support Surge from a customer service standpoint, along with any questions you might have during your use of the product. I apologize for any inconvenience and hope we can continue to provide you with Fitbit devices you love and help you reach your goals.

Thanks for your understanding, if there's anything else I can do for you, please feel free to reply.

I think part of the question that remains unanswered is “why” the sleep stages are not available with the Surge. Is there a reason other than a cynical commercial strategy by Fitbit to convince users to upgrade their watches? Is there a technical reason why the heart rate and movement data from the Surge is inadequate for this purpose? If not, extremely disappointed.

It really is upsetting that it is not possible to provide an update that allows the fit bit surge to provide more detailed sleep data.

Regardless of the surge being “not very popular” there is still a lot of users who spent extremely good money on purchasing a surge as it was a top of the line model.

Surely there is a person working within Fitbit who is able to take already prepared updates for other models and migrate the computer coding to be able to allow the Fitbit Surge to track more detailed sleep data.

As another user stated. Thoroughly disappointed in this.

Why would you completely disregard a whole section of the fit bit community?
