I’ve looked on the website, but haven’t been able to find any solid information about the sleep score, especially how it is calculated and how it correlates to any clinical issues.
Has Fitbit released anything? As it stands, I wouldn’t call the score “data” because I can’t understand how it’s calculated, and thus how it changes in response to any lifestyle changes I might make.
Are there any studies on why the sleep score is more clinically relevant than the average sleep time it replaced?

The only thing I've seen from fitbit is this help file:

I hate this score as a person who sleeps in two shifts. I want to know total hours slept at a glance and on the graphs. I don’t want an interpretation. Fitbit needs to allow it to be turned off and go back to time only.

What recommendations do people have for an alternative tracker to Fitbit for tracking activity and sleep? The new sleep score is useless.

I have exactly the same question.
The best answer -- albeit falling somewhat short: The sleep score is a combination of three other scores.

I too hate this new Sleep Score! I wake up in night for an hour or two and head back to bed and sleep for 1-2+hours. The sleep score does not track this second sleep!
Also, the scores vary with same times slept. I slept 8h8m last night and got a FAIR 77!! Makes no sense to me. Have read all Fitbit provides about this sleep score. Not impressed.
I too Want the choice of going back to total hours of sleep. At least THAT helps me!

I read through both articles, but the information is incredibly vague. I want to see the actual math behind this sleep score. Otherwise it’s a vague, meaningless number. If Fitbit is making a calculation based on our data, don’t we deserve to know exactly how they made these calculations?
