This is not a problem, but:
I recorded a run with both my Surge and my Ipod Touch Fitbit app. simultaneously.
The Ipod does not have gps and the IOS app warns the app user that measurements will be inaccurate.
I found that the app does give the same heartbeat average as my tracker/watch. The desktop maps of my route are also identical although the tracker shows all the wiggles of the route while the app uses only straight lines. The route was entirely in a woods. The number of steps and distance on the ipod are incorrect but perhaps because my stride was not calibrated.
My total distance for the day used my tracker information not the app readings, although when i used the app by itself, the readings were included in my daily total.

Hello @74prof, I hope you're having a great day, it's nice to see you around.
When you record an activity with your Surge using GPS and at the same time you're recording an activity with the Fitbit app, the two will merge and rewrite each other, which is why you're able to see a heart rate reading. It's possible the distance will be incorrect but that's only because the app hasn't finished updating the information with our servers.
I hope this resolves your inquiry, if you see a lot of discrepancies between both activities, please reply to me with a screenshot so I can check this further. Additionally, if there's anything else I can do for you, please feel free to reply.
