Too many steps -- app thinks Im walking at night

Nothing in my usage, settings, or activity has changed for weeks, but since the last fitbit app update, I am seeing hugely incorrect steps/miles walked. I do not use a wristband, just my iphone 5.

This am I walked .8 miles (as measured on google maps) to the mailbox and back, and fitbit app on ios says I walked 4.67 miles. I think the problem is that the app says I was walking all night; however, the phone was stationary on its charger.

I like the new dashboard design, but inaccurate stats make the app useless to me.  thanks for any suggestions or fixes in advance.

@anewman thanks for joining us! That sounds indeed weird. Have you tried to force quit your app? Also, I'd recommend logging out and then logging back in. Also, make sure you update your stride length as by default, stride length is calculated using your height and gender. So, if you haven't already I'd suggest updating your walking stride length by doing this:

  1. Go to a track or some place where you're sure of the distance.
  2. Count your steps as you walk across that distance, making sure you travel at least 20 steps.
  3. Divide the total distance (in feet) taken by the number of steps to get your stride length.

Restart your phone and then keep an eye to your distance and steps and let me know about it! Hope this helps! Cat Very Happy

Rebooting the phone did the trick.  Thank you so much for that recommendation.  I should have thought of that myself.

thanks for the response, Mariam.

Force quitting and even reinstalling the app did not resolve the problem. I am skeptical that the stride length is an issue because the app says I am walking even while the phone is not moving and sitting on the counter at night charging. I have not tried rebooting my phone.  I'll do that today.

I noticed that when I was camping recently and did not have internet access, so no sync was happening, the steps were recording accurately, so I'm also going to try turning off sync.
