there should be a toggle between us having to choose whether we want our BMR calories to count or not? I find it I sure that I need to subtract my actual activity calories from the total calories of the day COME ON FITBIT ADD THAT FEATURE ON!!

I think that BMR calories are included as standard because if you are using fitbit to manage your weight (as a lot of us are) you have to take them into consideration. It would be nice if there was an option though for those people who don't use fitbit that way.

yes that would be a great idea. so am I doing it right by subtracting my bmr calories from total calories burned? I'm new to Fitbit just picked up the Alta I input all my data and it has 1725 calories already burned for each day I'm guessing that's my BMR so any calories passed that would be my activity calories correct? just need a little help on how I should keep track of my actual calories burned

As my friend @SteveH has explained, your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the rate at which you burn calories at rest just to maintain vital body functions like breathing, heartbeat, and brain activity. Your BMR usually accounts for at least half of the calories you burn in a day and is estimated based on the physical data you entered when you set up your account: gender, age, height, and weight.

The calorie burn estimate that Fitbit provides takes into account your BMR, the activity recorded by your tracker, and any activities you log manually or the food you log.

Your tracker's calorie count will reset each night at midnight and begin counting immediately thereafter. BMR is the reason your tracker starts the day with calories already burned—you've still burned calories even if you haven't gotten out of bed yet.

Hope that helps!

so to understand this correctly I should subtract BMR calories from activity calories correct? in order for me to get my total activity calorie count.....I understand BMR is the standard but I can care less about those I really like the Fitbit Alta I was debating whether to return it or not. Fitbit should really implement a toggle switch for you to start at zero cals. or if you really want the BMR Calories included in total calories burned

Also I was really bummed at the fact that even while driving my step count would go up. but I figured my walking stride and running stride numbers and that fixed the problem
