I had a fitbit Alta and upgraded to an Alta HR when the Alta battery started failing and shutting the tracker down without warning. I kept it connected to my account so I could switch to it for a few hours or a day while my new HR charged. I wanted to have 2 devices and alternate so I got another HR but now I discover it is only possible to add multiple devices if they are different models. WHY??? Is there any workaround? Or do I have to sell it and get another model that uses a different charger and bands? Or loose the ability to track when my HR is charging?

I don't believe there's a way around this limitation
According to the following help file, fitbit do not see this as a bug to be fixed but they don't explain why the limitation is there: https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1715/

Thanks @Cosmic Hurdler.
It seems like such an odd limitation. I have access to another device but I'll need to source a new charger and bands, plus the new 2nd HR is virtually useless. Or it's back to my dying Alta. It's not the best business model to restrict user choice this way.

I agree. It's getting even worse when you can't have any combination of Charge 3, Ionic or Versa as well as not having two of the same type.
