Why can't I have more than one Fitbit device linked to my Fitbit account?

I’m going back a few years…

I used to have a Fitbit Alta, Fitbit One, and a Fitbit Zip all working on my account. I no longer have the Alta, I replaced with an Inspire 2. My Fitbit one finally died, so I put my Inspire 2 on a Clip and Dongle to Replace the One. I ordered a Fitbit Inspire 3 and it came on today. When I tried to set it up, the software on my iPhone wanted to replace my Inspire 2. What the heck? I called Support and the short story I am returning the Inspire 3 for credit because it won’t work. They told me any Fitbit I order won’t work. Did Google take away this feature that used to work? I like having multiple devices so I can use based on the exercise I am doing, or doing work in my yard that is dirty. I like having a nice Fitbit for use when in the office. Someone please explain…

Oft-requested for a long time but don't hold your breath.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
