Your calorie burn is a combination of your Base Metabolic Rate (BMR) and any activity you do (walking, exercising, etc). BMR is that which is needed to keep you alive (organs functioning, blood pumping, temperature stable). Your BMR is estimated based on your stats (gender, age, weight). You can find out your BMR by checking websites that have BMR calculators. Fitbit's calorie expenditure includes your BMR, Your total calorie expenditure (BMR + activities) is what needs to exceed your intake.
