Fitbit Ace unresponsive

I recently bought my daughter a Fitbit Ace, and have found it hugely frustrating. After setting up my own account and then a kids account, we charged the watch for a number of hours. The watch was responsive to taps while plugged in, and synced successfully. When removed from the charger, the watch becomes unresponsive, and cannot be synced. 

We have restarted the watch with the button on the charging cable, deleted the kids account and created a new one, and used a different phone to sync to. 

I would love suggestions to make this work please as I am not able to return it to where I purchased it from.
