For one day, the display on my Alta HR acted wonky, flashing and impossible to read – more like a problem with the LEDs/the screen. The next day, and ever since, the screen is totally blank. However, the fitbit itself is fine, syncing with the app/my phone, tracking steps, heart rate – basically doing everything except that I can't read it on my wrist. It's two years old.

Welcome to the Community, @avkkva.
Thanks for troubleshooting this display issue. If your tracker isn't turning on, I recommend restarting the unit by following the steps in the article: How do I restart my Fitbit device?. If this process doesn't work, try changing the clock face by follow the instructions in the article: How do I change the clock face on my Fitbit device?.
Let me know the outcome.
