My fitbit showed I walked 1.2miles but the route on Google maps shows it being 1.7miles. Why is my fitbit not accurately measuring the distance?

With Alta, I assume you are not connected to phone's GPS. So your distance is calculated as number of steps times stride length. Assuming you were not pushing a baby carriage or such to keep you fitbit wrist still, your step count is probably good. So it would mean your stride length may be set too low. Fitbit sets a default stride length based on your height, etc but you can adjust it. On phone app, tap the 'days of exercise' tile, then gear icon near top right to get to stride length setting. The most accurate way to get stride length would be on a measured course such as a lap on a running track, to measure number of steps to walk one lap. Alternatively if you are fairly confident of the distance of the walk you mentioned, just multiply your stride length by 1.42, (1.7 / 1.2), though I would be surprised if it is off by that much, and it will vary going uphill or down. You can just make an approximate adjustment, then keep fine-tuning to get your distance to match the route.
The only think that stride length affects is the conversion of step count to distance.
