I think there may be a couple of causes of this.
Firstly, on the friends tile the total shown is the steps for today plus the steps for the previous 6 days - is that what you meant by "the past 7 days"?
Secondly, the friends tile total steps only includes steps that were directly tracked by your fitbit. Any steps from manually logged activities or 3rd party apps are not included.
Could one of these explain the numbers you are seeing?
