Alta won't sync unless I turn on GPS

All of a sudden, my alta won't sync until I turn on my gps. I was under the impression it synced via Bluetooth....why would my GPS have anything to do with it? And im talking straight syncing steps, not even for tracking running. Samsung Galaxy s6 running Android 6.01

You are correct in that your phone communicates with your fitbit via Bluetooth. However, as explained by one of the moderators in the linked thread, Google changed the required permissions when they introduced Android 6
