Only syncs when I go into app and it takes a very long time.  Can't it be set to sync automatically?

Thanks for the explanation. In this case I recommend you take a look at the following article: . This way the app is always active and it can sync on the background. I also suggest you try the tips in this article: Why won't my Fitbit device sync?.
