Connection difficulties with Versa Lite after factory reset

After an app update, my versa lite stopped receiving messages from my samsung S8.  I checked all notification settings, bluetooth settings etc.  Restarted phone and fitbit watch.  It was still functioning as a tracker and syncing to the app on my phone.  Still would not receive phone messages.   Did a factory reset and now when I try to set up the device (I unpaired it) it connects to the app, gives the 4 digit code and then says setting up versa lite.  It gets to step 2 of 3 Downloading .....1% and then does nothing more.  The app then shows it as a device and says Synched today.  If I click on the update for the device the app says looking - battery full and has a pink symbol saying update available.   It then says update failed. The symbol on the watch is white and pulsing....but nothing more happens.  I have to unpair to get it to stop trying as it goes forever at this point.  I bought the versa lite in December 2019 so it is not that old and was working fine until a week ago or so.
