I want to edit me outdoor activity to kayaking but every time I try to do that I get a message saying "please specify the amount of calories burned or select to have your calories counted automatically " and I can't see how to do either of these  things. Can anyone help?

@swickie  I moved the thread to the Android forum.  This is an issue with the Android app.  I used the Outdoor Workout shortcut, then easily changed it to kayaking in the iOS app.  My exercise record had shows an icon of a figure in a kayak, too.

I'm also going to flag a moderator to help you.  The Outdoor Workout has been available since 2020 and was designed for non step based activities like kayaking and downhill skiing.  You should be able to rename it!

@swickie   You mention edit in your post and I'm not sure how you are getting to the screen you describe.  To clarify, because you wrote outdoor activity, the correct shortcut for kayaking is Outdoor Workout.  When you are done, go to the Exercise Details in your mobile app and tap on Categorize Exercise.  You should be able to enter Kayaking in the search field.

Hi LzeeW

Thank you for your response. I do mean Outdoor Workout but I don't see any
option to Categorise Exercise. I can edit the exercise type, but when I
"log it" it comes up with that message.

Thanks

@swickie   Do you use an Android phone?  I looked at a bunch of Exercise Detail images and the Android screens are very different from the iOS screens.

If you use an Android phone, I can move this thread to the Android app forum where a fellow Android user can help you.

I have Android. For a test, I started a spinning exercise. After 3 minutes I stopped it, synced, clicked on the exercise it the android exercise tile. Renamed it to Kayaking. Mine took it no problem. Didn't get hung on Calories.

I think it might be specific to changing from Outlook Workout, as I can change other activities.  I was under the impression that to record water activities I should choose Outdoor Workout then change it. Is this not correct?

Yes, I am on Android. Thanks.

@swickie I don't know anything about changing from Outlook Workout. On the watch itself, you would only need swimming if you want laps. And heart rate would be disabled then. Most of the Fitbit exercises are just labels. It's just watching your heart rate and giving you steps. You could use about anything and then change it to Kayaking. Unless you want a map too. Could try run or outdoor bike to get GPS?

Sorry, I meant Outdoor Workout. Long day. That gives the GPS I need, and
was led to believe this was the way to do it as per
https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Charge-5/Kayaking-app-on-Charge-5/td-p/5382251#:~:text=Click%20on%20...
.

However, I'll try logging as a run or bike as you suggest next time.

I'll post back in a few days. Thank you

@swickie I don't have outdoor workout on my preferred versa 2, But I see my Versa 3 has is it. I can try outdoor workout on that on a backup account and see what happens.

I get the same results. It gets stuck at calories with no options to move forward.

@swickie I did notice a bike ride has calories listed when I click the edit option. Don't know if something other than outdoor workout will work for you until Fitbit resolves it?

Hi MarkMM,

Yes I can log it as a bike ride and then change it, so this is a workaround. Personally I'm not interested in the calories - just want to be able to log my kayaking with GPS!

Thanks for your suggestion.

@LZeeW Thanks for your input and flagging this to us moderators. @MarkMM I really appreciate your input and your testing. I can confirm, I received the same error message with the calories and could not edit the activity. I have the latest version of the app. I will be reporting this and get back to you once we have more information. I am glad to read you have found a workaround for the time being.
