I'd love it if fitbit answered your question but they don't tend to announce anything until it is released. Which fitbit do you have? Are you hoping for any new feature in particular? If so you could post a feature request at: https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Feature-Requests/idb-p/features

I rather doubt firmware has anything to do with it; I suspect updates to the Android app is what enables new to market phones to become compatible.
